Obituary for Marie Isabella Owen (Travis)

Memorials are preferred to the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville, or Avera Holy Family Hospital.

Marie Isabella (Travis) Owen was born on August 2, 1919, in Janesville, Wisconsin, to William James and Anna (Hoort) Travis. She passed away at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the age of 98 years.
At the age of five Marie moved to Chicago, Illinois, with her family. She attended school in the Chicago area and graduated from Christian Finger High School in 1937. in 1938, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. She later attended Burroughs Bookkeeping Machine School for a year and half. She married Burke Thomas Miller, Jr on October 31, 1939. He passed away on November 2, 1942. During World War II she volunteered with the First Red Cross Nurse’s Aides in Phoenix. She was later married to Major P.E. Owen on October 18, 1944, in North Ft. Hood, Texas. The couple made their home in Phoenix where Marie was employed with G&S Manufacturing where she was a bookkeeper and office manager. The family moved to Estherville in 1962. Edward passed away on December 18, 1980.
Marie was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. She was active in Circle where she served a leader, as an elder, and sang in the Church Choir. She was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3388 Ladies Auxiliary in Estherville. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge and 500, entertaining friends and family, sewing her own clothes, reading, cooking and baking.
Marie is survived by her children: Penelope A. Allen of Cottonwood, Arizona; daughter-in-law, Susan Owen of Gilmore City, Iowa; four grandchildren, Will (Brenda) Allen, Ed (Pam) Allen, Jerome (Mary) Owen, Rachael (Joe) Amodeo; six great-grandchildren and her daily helper and companion, Dawn Claypool.
She is preceded in death by both husbands; an infant son; son, William "Bill" Owen; her parents and step-father.
