Claude John Haag Sr., 100, passed away peacefully at home in Ames, Iowa, on June 7, 2018.

Claude was born in Hospers, Iowa on July 23, 1917 to Cyril Haag and Catherine (Boever) Haag. He lived on a farm near Ledyard, Iowa with his parents and 14 younger brothers and sisters, Colette, Pearl, Ruth, Blanche, Melbourne, Darlene, Vernon, Isabelle, Merlyn, Mary Ann, Arthur, Rita, Frances, and Lyle. He went to school in Ledyard, Iowa. After 8th grade, when the Great Depression hit, he had to leave school to help his father on the farm. He never stopped learning, though, and was a voracious reader.

He joined the United States Army on February 4, 1942. He proudly served his country in World War II. After his military service, he married Mildred Bernice Smith on March 23, 1945 in Swea City, Iowa. They bought a farm outside of Swea City and had four children, Claude Haag Jr., Vicki Schleusner, Kathy (Aaron) Keller, and Marilyn Haag. Claude worked on his farm until the age of 88. He moved to Ames in 2009 to live with his daughter, Marilyn.

Claude was a hard-working man and deeply valued God, his family, honesty, and integrity. He was a man of great character who was a strong and steady influence on his family. He invested significantly in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and received great joy from them.

Claude is survived by his four children, his five grandchildren, Corey (Jessica) Kitchner, Clay (Berit) Kitchner, Caleb (Annie) Keller, Jessica (Sam) Stagg, and Zachary (Melissa) Keller and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 54 years, Bernice, his sisters Colette, Ruth, and Darlene, his brothers Melbourne, Merlyn, and Arthur, and his son-in-law David Schleusner.
