Dorothy Ann Helmich, the daughter of Amos and Margaret (Brobst) Mammen, was born July 17, 1936, at home near Graettinger, Iowa. She died on April 5, 2019 passed away at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg at the age of 82 years; 22 years to the day after her husband, Donny, .

She received her education and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1954.

On June 30, 1954, she was united in marriage to Donald Helmich in Jackson, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Graettinger and raised their family. Dorothy worked in home health as a Certified Nurse’s Aide for many years retiring at the age of 77. Dorothy was known to family and friends as “Grandma Dit”, “Grandma Ditzy”, “Grandma Dip”, or "Dort". Dit enjoyed reading, playing cards, watching game shows, going to casino’s and having coffee with friends. She loved to polka with Eloise and do the chicken dances at all weddings she attended. Dit loved her family most of all, and being surrounded by them was the most important thing to her.

She was a member of United Methodist Church, UMW and served on the funeral committee.

Left to cherish Dorothy’s memory are her children, Steve (Kathy) Helmich of Graettinger; Cindy (Dave Scheller) Domek of Algona; Ted (Raynell) Helmich of Sac City; Pat Rierson of Algona; Julie Smith of Terril; Debbie (Jason) McDermott of Spirit Lake; 22 grandchildren; 57 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; sister, Nancy (Paul) Kroenke of Graettinger; and wanna-be-sister, Joy “Eloise” Heller of Graettinger.

She has been preceded in death by her husband, Donny; parents, Amos and Margaret; brothers, Kenny, Richard, Robert and William; granddaughter, Jessica; and Peaches.

Dit was such a good friend, sister-in-law, and neighbor to Mom for so many years! From my earliest memories, I have always loved Dit and plan to continue loving her giving, gentle spirit.

I remember when me and my sister (Morgan) went to a garage sale and she bought this big carpet. She didn’t use the carpet ever but she bought it. She put me in the backseat with it and it hardly fit in the car and I got so mad at her
